New Abbey Road Promo for “Vinyl Saturday” Tomorrow

Don’t forget your Vinyl Saturday tree

Tomorrow, U.S. independent record stores will sell a unique LP boxed-set edition, limited to 5,000 copies, of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” as part of a series of promotions designed to drive foot traffic into indie record stores hard-hit by the boom in digital music sales. Tomorrow is also the 40th anniversary of the release of Abbey Road.

The exclusive 40th-anniversary vinyl edition of the album, licensed and produced by EMI, includes a T-shirt and poster featuring artwork from the collection’s two-sided hit single, “Come Together”/”Something.”

The “Vinyl Saturday” promotion is a new effort, very similar to “Record Store Day,” to help drive people to small music stores in lieu of exploding online and digital music sales. This Saturday, it will involve 200 indie music retailers across the country. Haven’t been able to find out which ones though, as it seems that there is no Vinyl Saturday website or participating store list anywhere to be found, much to my dismay. It seems that this all-of-a-sudden Vinyl Saturday was put together very last minute and there isn’t much information on it. Regardless, here is a list of all of the record stores in Jersey that are registered on the Record Store Day website. Not sure who’s participating tomorrow though. If anybody knows, PLEASE FILL ME IN.

According to an interview on Variety, Former Beatle Paul McCartney said he was happy to support the cause with what is sure to be a collector-coveted edition of “Abbey Road.”

“When I recently played Amoeba (musicstore) in L.A., I realized what fantastic memories such a collection of music will bring back when you see it all in one place,” McCartney said in a statement.

Online retailers are lined up and ready to go on ebay. The promo record and t-shirt is listed in abundance for $60. Get yours here.

In addition to the Beatles promo record, LCD Soundsystem will be covering Alan Vega for Vinyl Saturday as well. They will be releasing a 12″ featuring a cover of “Bye Bye Bayou” from Alan Vega’s 1980 solo debut Alan Vega. Buy it then at an independent record store near you tomorrow.

Go out tomorrow and support your local, independent record store! Tell your friends.
